Erasmus+ KA1 Seminar: Inclusion through Art: A Joint Venture by Eekhout Academy International, MAVC College and the Malta School of Art

Eekhout Academy International, in collaboration with Malta School of Art and MAVC College, has recently held another edition of its Erasmus+ KA1 seminar on Inclusion through Art. This weeklong course which was held between the 25th and 29th November was designed for art educators working in mainstream schools and aimed to explore the power of art as a tool for fostering inclusivity in the classroom.
The head of College Network, Victor Galea and course director Wim Simeons gave an overview of the course and spoke about the partnership, which enables such seminars to materialize.
Guest speakers included Antonello Gauci, from Inspire, Maria Borg from Agenzia Zghazagh, Sarah Vella from CATS, Rosetta Debattista from Malta Trust Foundation, Psychotherapist Umberto Buttigieg, whilst Ilona Baldacchino, Douglas Comley and Peter Fenech represented Opening Doors. Luisa Brexo, from Portugal, led the groups throughout the week.
Participants engaged in a variety of hands-on activities and theoretical discussions that delved into the principles of inclusive education and the role of art in creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment for all students.

Key topics included:
Understanding diversity and disability: Participants explored the concept of diversity and disability in the context of education, and learnt about the challenges and opportunities that arise from a diverse student population.
Adapting art practices to meet individual needs: Educators learnt practical strategies for adapting art activities and assessments to meet the needs of students with a wide range of abilities and learning styles.
Using art to promote self-expression and confidence: The seminar explored how art can be used as a powerful tool for promoting self-expression, creativity, and confidence in all students, regardless of their background or abilities.
Creating inclusive classroom communities: Participants learnt about the importance of creating inclusive classroom communities where all students feel valued, respected, and supported.


The seminar, equipped educators with practical strategies and resources to implement inclusive art education practices in their own schools. The seminar also provided a valuable opportunity for educators to network with colleagues from other countries and share best practices in the field of inclusive education.
