MAVC School of Art: Preserving our Artistic Legacy

As part of our commitment to preserving the school’s legacy, we are currently conserving a number of paintings from our historical archive. These paintings have been carefully mounted and framed, forming part of a small display that highlights works created by Giorgio Preca and Willie Apap during their time as students at the school under the direction of Edward Caruana Dingli.

The paintings are now on display in the school’s ground-floor hall, offering students and visitors an opportunity to engage with this important chapter of the school’s history. Created during the artists’ formative years, these works provide a valuable insight into the training, techniques, and artistic environment that shaped a generation of Maltese artists.

Beyond their historical value, the paintings also reveal the discipline and academic formation that characterised art education of the time. By bringing these works out of the School’s archives and now into a shared space within the school, the display encourages reflection on the continuity of artistic practice, thus linking past and present students through a shared place of learning and creativity.

This small archival presentation also forms part of the school’s wider effort to safeguard, document, and share its artistic national heritage, ensuring that the work and experiences of earlier students continue to inspire new generations of artists.
